Every Friday morning, excitement fills our Kindergarten classrooms as students gather for one of their favorite weekly traditions—the Super Scientist Showcase. This special program invites our young learners to step into the role of scientist, presenter, and leader, and it has quickly become a highlight of the week for students, teachers, and families alike.

What Is a Super Scientist?

Each week, one student in every Kindergarten class is selected as the Super Scientist. During their week, the student chooses an experiment to explore and prepares for Friday’s big presentation with the support of their parents. Together, they research the experiment, gather materials, make predictions, measure ingredients, and practice explaining the process.

This preparation builds scientific thinking, responsibility, and excitement about learning—while strengthening the connection between home and school.

Friday’s Big Showcase

On Friday morning, the Super Scientist takes center stage. The student shares what they learned during the week, explains their experiment, and performs it live for their classmates.

As part of the presentation, students ask questions, invite classmates to make predictions, and guide their peers through the scientific process. The classroom buzzes with curiosity, wonder, and applause as each experiment unfolds.

Building Young Leaders and Confident Speakers

Programs like Super Scientist are about much more than fun experiments. When young students stand in front of their peers to teach and lead, they build confidence, communication skills, and a strong sense of ownership in their learning.

Presenting at an early age helps children develop their voice, practice public speaking, and see themselves as capable leaders in their classroom community.

Partnering with Parents in Learning

Parent involvement is a key part of the Super Scientist experience. By working alongside their child to prepare, families become partners in the learning process.

These shared moments—mixing ingredients at the kitchen table, practicing explanations, and watching with pride as the final experiment is shared in front of classmates—create meaningful memories and reinforce the joy of discovery.

Joyful, Hands-On Learning at St. James

At St. James Episcopal Day School, we believe learning should be joyful, hands-on, and connected to real experiences. Our Super Scientist program is one of the many ways we nurture curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning in our students—one experiment at a time.
