Welcome to Third Grade!

Greetings from the third grade team of Mrs. McDowell and Mrs. Ray.  We are looking forward to a great year during the "Third Grade Experience".  Mrs. McDowell and Mrs. Ray will be teaching Math and Vocabulary, Wordly Wise, to all of the third graders this year.  A wealth of information will be shared with our students daily as well as the presentation of many new skills and lessons using the ActivBoards, laptops, manipulatives, Singapore Math,  textbooks and library resources.

In Math, we will learn about Place Value, Money, Adding and Subtracting large numbers, Graphing, Probability, Multiplication, Division, Patterns, Time, Temperature, Measurement, Fractions, and Decimals.  The use of laptops, manipulatives, Singapore Math, and hands-on activities will make the Math Experience one they will not forget.  Test taking skills, Daily Math Practice, Mountain Math and ERB standardized test preparation will also be part of daily lessons.

Vocabulary is taught from the Wordly Wise 3000 Series.  Words are used to think, express ideas and feelings, and to learn about the world.  Successful reading comprehension has been linked to word knowledge as many standardized tests are basically tests of vocabulary and reading comprehension.  Tools, strategies, and techniques will be introduced to make vocabulary development an integral part of the third grade instruction.

Two Project Based Learning units will be presented and explored this year-one on Constellations during the first semester and another Flat Stanley project during the second Semester.  In addition to our curriculum, we also have many wonderful daily enrichments and planned field trips.  This year we will visit LASM, Circle Bowl, and Oakley Plantation home.  We will also have an Easter Egg Hunt, and a wonderful End-of-the-Year swimming party.

Last, but certainly not lease, all third graders will have their own personal laptops for daily instruction, participation, education, and training.  The laptops are used in all classrooms and are a favorite item among the students.

Our parents are encouraged to be proactive with our curriculum and to share talents, knowledge and professions with us.  You are invited to share lunch with us and participate in field trips and parties.

Thank you for sharing your children with us this year.  We promise to make the "Third Grade Experience" one you and your children will remember for years to come.
