The second grade at SJEDS marks a special time in our students educational development. The curriculium solidifies the learning experience from first grade. Collaboration though projects and a hands-on approach to learning is part of the classroom experience. Instruction is in the form of whole group, small groups, formal instruction, independent work, peer tutoring and learning centers.

The math instructional program makes frequent use of manipulatives and gives students a concrete, hands-on understanding of math skills and problem solving. Direct instruction, practice, re-teaching and challenges are used to teach the second grade skills of regrouping in addition and subtraction, time, money, fractions, measurement, geometry, place value, and simple multiplication and division.
The science program focuses on life science, earth science and physical science. Emphasis is placed on discussion, experimenting, observing, predicting, and problem solving.
In the social studies curriculum, the children develop an understanding of where places are and how places are linked to one another. The children work with maps, charts, graphs, tables, and timelines as they become active participants in learning about the world around them. Activities seek to foster responsible citizenship as we live, work and play together.
